One

Entertain a thought, long given up for lost,
The theme and goal of every sweet epistle,
The reconciling aim of Christ our God.

Entertaining pride, and seeking length of power;
Not one thousand years past Christ-bought peace,
Men cleaved the East and West from North to South.

Entertained for millennia was the soothing lie,
That through an institution we could meet the aim.
The sights were set on Hell.

Having entertained a vulgar truth, men fought;
And through the Spirit’s wielding, of necessity they cleaved
The body from its self-styled “head.”

Now enter and attain the unity of Scripture, broken, spurring,
Deferential love, born of cleaving fast to Christ our Head,
To let us grow together into Him.
